Mission
The church here at SJR has a long-standing history of supporting those involved in Christian mission work, both in the UK and overseas. We currently support a number of individuals and organisations in prayer, many of them also financially. A brief summary of each cause we support is given below, with highlighted links to their websites where applicable.
Sports Chaplaincy UK - Rev John Boyers
The charity Sports Chaplaincy UK (formerly SCORE) was established in 1991 to support the full-time sports chaplaincy work of one of our former ministers,
Marilyn Baker Ministries
Marilyn was for a long time a resident of Watford and a SJR church member, and is now based in Tonbridge. Blind since birth, she has nevertheless been wonderfully gifted musically by God, and has been in full-time Christian music ministry for over 30 years. Torch Trust
Torch Trust for the Blind, based in Market Harborough, Leics, produces Christian resources for the blind and partially sighted. Former SJR associate member, Carol Nokes, has worked for Torch for many years.
BU Home Mission
The Baptist Union’s Home Mission department supports various Baptist initiatives in England & Wales, providing grants for new ministries and support for small churches, as well as funding the BU’s full-time staff.
Baptist Missionary Society
Established over 200 years ago, BMS World Mission today has partnerships with over 30 countries on 4 continents, with its personnel involved in evangelism; church planting; theological education; medical, educational and agricultural work; etc.

Anne
Anne works with a Christian Development Organisation working among marginalised, vulnerable and disadvantaged people in North Africa. She is engaged in developing teaching and activities for those with learning difficulties.
Gareth & Liz Morris
Gareth & Liz are former members of SJR who now live in Prague where Gareth is part-time minister at the International Baptist Church, as well as continuing working part-time for IFES, the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students.
Urban Saints - Bernie Wheeler
Since 1906 Urban Saints, formerly known as Crusaders, has been reaching out to children and young people with the good news of Jesus Christ. Former SJR member, Bernie Wheeler, is a local area representative.
Watford Town Centre Chaplaincy
WTTC is a local Christian charitable organisation aiming to bring a spiritual dimension to the life of our town, through being present in the workplace and serving the heart of our workers and community.
WNHT is a local Christian charitable organisation ministering to the homeless in our town.
Watford Schools Trust
WST, which is associated with Scripture Union, seeks to make Jesus known among our local schoolchildren by funding full- and part-time workers to regularly visit local schools, and also by providing useful resources.
Alternatives Watford
Alternatives is a local Christian initiative, which offers a welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere at its drop-in centre & councelling for women. It provides a listening ear, support and encouragement and practical help. It runs a linked charity shop for mums and lunch clubs in local schools.
